This week I’m on vacation. I originally planned on travelling to Europe, but plans changed and I’ll be just sitting at home instead (will travel to San Diego later this fall though).
No major plans this week, it’s going to be a staycation really. I might do some local travelling over the weekend, however. There’s a lot to do in the Pacific Northwest and I don’t want to be couped up in the house the whole week.
For the days I’m home, what am I going to do?
I haven’t quite decided yet. Ideally I’d like to focus on a few things instead of getting myself overwhelmed with the amount of things I can do. One of the issues with modern technology is the overwhelming amount of choice available. Just look at the anime selections alone on Netflix, Crunchyroll, and Hulu. I can spend every day of an entire year devoted to watching anime and I still won’t be able to finish everything.
Then you add TV, movies, video games, tabletop games, and daily responsibilities. I find myself constantly overwhelmed to the point of inactivity. Decision Paralysis.
I find self-limitation the best way (so far) to solve this. Basically what I’m doing is creating a list, and sticking with that list until either the activity is complete, or I find myself just far too frustrated/bored with the activity to move on. I’ve also divided my games by console and genre.
So here’s my list so far. I hope to stick with it through my vacation at home. We’ll see at the end of the week how far along I am, and what my plans are for the following week.
Entertainment
Sound! Euphonium (響け!ユーフォニアム) (Crunchyroll/VRV) – A lighthearted Shoujo anime focused around some girls practicing in a high school band. I finished Season 1 just a couple days ago. Currently on Episode 3 of Season 2. I’d like to finish this and move on to something else, preferably lighthearted (not in the mood for Shounen stuff lately). I’m thinking Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai or Violet Evergarden.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Hulu) – I’d like to continue with this show. It gives me a lot of 90’s nostalgia and I really enjoy it. Though the amount of silly filler episodes (such as the episode of the praying mantis teacher) makes me want to watch something else instead, perhaps Veronica Mars? Vikings? This may change.
The Last Wish (Book/Kindle) – Rereading this, and working through the entire Witcher series before the Netflix series comes out this Fall.
Video Games
BanG Dream! Girls Band Party(バンドリ)(iOS) – This is the only mobile game I’m playing at the moment. I lost my save last year and couldn’t bare the frustration of reinstalling this game and start again from scratch. They introduced cloud saving, fortunately, and after a week of playing I’m about the level of where I was before I lost all my save data. Fun game, and I’m just enjoying the VN elements to the game. I’ve spent over two hours alone on just Chapter 0 of Poppin’ Party’s origins.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Switch) – I originally wasn’t too crazy about the scenario compared to FE Awakening and FE Fates, but it’s growing on me. I’m playing through the storyline of the Black Eagles (I had to go with Edelgard!). It has a very Persona-like feel to it, which works surprisingly well with the Fire Emblem formula, and you really feel a connection to everyone in your party.
Total War: Three Kingdoms (PC) – The only strategy game that I tell myself each day “I really want to play”, yet don’t actually do. Not that it’s a bad game, it’s just that it’s a time sink. I can find myself easily watching 2-3 hours go by, and sometimes I want to do other things.
Star Wars: Battlefront II (PS4) – This is my multiplayer choice for this week. I just picked this up for $7. Not sure what the state of the game is, but if it’s not good, I might go back to Magic the Gathering Arena. It’s a quick pick-up-and-play multiplayer game so I don’t anticipate spending too much time on it.
Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations (3DS) – I should probably put at least one handheld game on my list. My 3DS has been collecting dust for months (the Switch has been taking over instead), yet there are still many games I’d like to play for it. I’m going to try to finally finish AA: Trials and Tribulations before moving on to other games.
Hobbies
Arkham Horror: The Card Game – Not sure where I’m going to go with this game. I have it all set up, but had no motivation in the last week to actually play it. I might swap it out to try out Mansions of Madness instead, so this might actually change.
LEGO Apollo 11 Lunar Lander – I got the base done, just need to work on the lander itself. Unfortunately my work area is taken by my board game setup.
That’s about it. I’m going to try to knock out as much as I can from this list, but things can and will change through the week. I’m eager to see how far I’ve progressed for next weeks blog update!
