Thoughts on the Nintendo Switch and Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Hey there, here are some quick thoughts on the new Switch and Zelda.

So I got myself a Nintendo Switch and my reactions so far are pretty mixed. I don’t see it quite replacing my 3DS since it doesn’t have the battery life nor does it have the social features such as Street Passes or the Miiverse. I don’t see it replacing my PS4 as my primary console either. In fact, I don’t see myself shelving my WiiU until the Switch has a decent and substancial library.

On the other hand, the major launch title for the Switch, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, is simply fantastic. It’s a game that makes me feel like I am legitimatly exploring a vast new world. It doesn’t really “feel” like a game cluttered with objectives like most open-world games are. Nor does it feel like an environment constrained by walls or other boundries. The best way to describe Zelda: BotW it is that it’s an experience. An experience that I can definitly put in my personal top 10 as one of the greatest games of all time.

So the Switch may be a mediocre console, but you’ll be missing out on the definitive edition of Zelda: BotW…and being able to play it on-the-go is something you can’t do with the WiiU version.

If it wasn’t for Zelda, I would consider the Switch a flop. But with many games up on the horizon: a new Mario, a new Splatoon, Fire Emblem Heroes, etc. There is hopefully a bright future for the Switch. I for one am going to enjoy exploring Hyrule for many weeks to come.
